Guide to painting a metal model or display stand

Metal models and display stands need a neat finish without heavy edges, runs or rough primer marks. This guide uses professional cleaning, sanding, epoxy primer and 2K colour options for a small object that has to look clean from close range.

What do you need to paint a metal model or display stand?

Pre-paint cleaning

Mipa silicone remover liquid or spray removes grease, fingerprints and polishing residue before the surface is keyed.

Fine surface preparation

MP Sanding Pad helps create a uniform matt key on flat faces, corners and shaped details without harsh grinding marks.

Corrosion resistant primer

Mipa EP Primer Surfacer with Mipa EP hardener E 5 and Mipa 2K Thinner Short V 10 prepares steel, aluminium and zinc before the decorative colour coat.

Compact aerosol primer

Mipa 2K-EP Primer Filler Spray incl. hardener gives small display pieces a practical 2K primer option when spray gun use is not ideal.

Decorative 2K colour

Mipa OC Ready Mixed Tones RM with Mipa 2K-HS Hardener HS 10 short and Mipa 2K Thinner Short V 10 gives the stand a professional colour finish.

Filled 2K aerosol colour

Mipa 2K Prefilled Spray is suited to a small custom colour job where an activated 2K aerosol is the most efficient format.

How to paint a metal model or display stand

  1. 1
    Clean and inspect the piece

Remove grease and check welds, corners and old paint so defects are corrected before primer.

  2. 2
Sand to an even matt finish

Use the sanding pad across every visible face and soften sharp edges that might lose paint first.

  3. 3
    Prime the metal

Apply EP Primer Surfacer or the 2K epoxy primer aerosol in controlled coats, then allow the surface to reach the correct stage for colour.

  4. 4
    Apply the final colour

Use Mipa OC or a filled 2K aerosol in light passes, aiming for clean coverage without burying fine detail.

  5. 5
Protect the finish while it cures

Place the stand where dust and fingerprints cannot touch it until the coating is ready for handling.

Which finish method suits a metal display piece?

Choose liquid 2K for a premium display finish

The EP primer and OC colour method gives the cleanest professional path for a stand that will be seen close up.

Choose filled aerosol for a small custom colour

Mipa 2K Prefilled Spray is useful when the piece is small, colour matched and easier to spray as an aerosol.

Use light coats to protect detail

Small models and stands can lose crisp edges under too much coating, so build coverage gradually.

Technical details

  • EP Primer Surfacer provides corrosion protection and direct adhesion on steel, aluminium and zinc.
  • The 2K colour system uses hardener and thinner matched to the coating stage, which supports proper curing and durability.
  • Close-view display pieces need a cleaner sanding finish than rough utility brackets because primer scratches can remain visible under gloss colour.
  • Aerosol work should use multiple light passes rather than one wet pass, especially around edges and raised detail.
Practical suggestion

Mount the part on a temporary wire, screw or stand so the visible faces can be sprayed without touching fresh paint.
