Guide to painting a canoe or kayak exterior

A rigid canoe or kayak exterior needs careful cleaning, sanding, local repair and a durable colour finish. This method is strongest for solid GRP, repaired composite areas and stable old coatings rather than soft flexible polyethylene hulls.

What do you need to paint a canoe or kayak exterior?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes wax, oil and polish residue before repair filling, sanding checks or coating.

Epoxy repair filler

Mipa E 90 with Mipa hardener EPN repairs small chips, scratches and worn areas on suitable rigid substrates before the colour coat.

Satin gloss 2K PU finish

Mipa PU 250-70 gives a durable satin gloss colour finish for the prepared canoe or kayak exterior when the substrate is suitable for this coating system.

2K curing and thinning

Mipa PU 912-25 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25 complete the compatible PU topcoat stage when the coating is mixed for application.

How to paint a canoe or kayak exterior

  1. 1
    Clean the hull

Wash off dirt, algae, salt and old polish, then dry the exterior fully before sanding or filling begins.

  2. 2
    Sand the surface

Create a uniform dull key over the area to be painted, feathering old stable coating and smoothing rough repair edges.

  3. 3
    Repair local damage

Use Mipa E 90 with EPN hardener on suitable rigid substrates for small chips or damaged spots, then sand the repair smooth after curing.

  4. 4
    Degrease before topcoat

Remove dust and residue with Mipa silicone remover so the colour coat lands on a clean surface.

  5. 5
    Apply the finish

Apply Mipa PU 250-70 with the correct hardener and thinner, building even coats and avoiding heavy wet edges on curves.

Which canoe or kayak coating choice should you make?

Repair before colour

Choose Mipa E 90 where scratches or small chips need filling, because a topcoat will not hide broken edges or uneven repairs by itself.

Use PU topcoat for rigid surfaces

Choose Mipa PU 250-70 for a stable, prepared rigid exterior where a satin gloss 2K finish is suitable.

Check flexible plastic carefully

Soft polyethylene and highly flexible hulls need a separate adhesion check before painting, because many coatings do not bond reliably to that material.

Technical details

  • Mipa E 90 is a solvent-free 2K epoxy filler for metal, aluminium, zinc, GRP, wood and mineral substrates, mixed 2:1 by weight with EPN hardener.
  • Mipa PU 250-70 is a satin gloss 2K PU topcoat used with the correct PU hardener and thinner for the selected application method.
  • Clean and sand before filling, then sand again after curing so repaired areas do not telegraph through the finish.
  • Do not use this as an antifouling or permanent underwater coating method.
Practical suggestion

Paint the canoe or kayak on stable supports with the hull at a comfortable working height. Keep the first coats controlled on curved edges, then finish larger panels once the edges are covered.
