Paint a camper or caravan exterior panel

Camper exterior panel refinishing

Guide to painting a camper or caravan exterior panel

A camper or caravan exterior panel needs careful cleaning, keying, primer, colour and clearcoat protection. This guide uses the specified Mipa EP primer filler system, BC basecoat and CC 8 clearcoat system for a structured refinish method on a stable exterior panel.

What do you need to paint a camper or caravan exterior panel?

Degreasing cleaner

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or aerosol format removes wax, grease and silicone before sanding, primer or coating.

Surface keying pad

MP Soft Pad Fine helps dull stable exterior panel paint and trim-adjacent edges without cutting too aggressively into broad shapes.

EP primer filler system

Mipa EP primer filler creates the primer stage on prepared areas. Mipa EP Hardener E 25 normal and Mipa EP Thinner stay with this primer filler stage.

BC basecoat colour

Mipa BC Ready Mixed Two-Layer Basecoat creates the colour layer for the prepared camper or caravan panel and is used with Mipa BC Thinner VDG where required by the system.

CC 8 clearcoat system

Mipa 2K-HS Clearcoat CC 8 protects the basecoat colour. Mipa 2K-HS Hardener HS 25 normal and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25 stay with this clearcoat stage.

How to paint a camper or caravan exterior panel

  1. 1
    Clean and inspect the panel

Remove wax, grease and silicone before sanding, then check that the panel surface is stable enough to refinish.

  2. 2
    Key the surface

Use the soft pad to dull stable old paint and prepare panel edges for the primer stage.

  3. 3
    Prime prepared areas

Apply the EP primer filler system where the repair area or prepared surface needs primer support before colour.

  4. 4
    Apply colour and clearcoat

Apply the BC basecoat colour, then protect it with the CC 8 clearcoat system after the colour layer is ready.

Which camper panel refinish method should you choose?

Complete panel method

Use the primer, basecoat and clearcoat method for a broader exterior panel where colour and gloss need to flow across the full prepared area.

Cleaner format choice

Use liquid silicone remover for broad panels and the aerosol cleaner for smaller edges, trims and local preparation areas.

Technical details

  • BC basecoat is the colour layer and needs a compatible clearcoat for gloss and protection.
  • Hardener and thinner products stay with the exact coating stage they are used in, such as EP primer filler or CC 8 clearcoat.
  • Exterior panels should be dry, stable and free from loose sealant or failing old coating before refinishing.
Practical suggestion

Plan masking before sanding around windows, roof trim and seals. Clean edges make the finished panel look much more professional.
