Guide to painting aluminium car body panels

Aluminium car panels need correct cleaning and adhesion priming before the colour system is applied. The primer choice matters because aluminium is less forgiving than stable painted steel when coating adhesion is weak.

What do you need to paint aluminium car body panels?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid format and Mipa silicone remover spray remove wax, grease and silicone before sanding or coating. Clean again after sanding so dust and fingerprints do not sit under the new finish.

Aluminium adhesion primer

Mipa Active Primer 2K Wash Primer with Hardener WPZ gives a chromate free adhesion base for aluminium and other non ferrous metal work. It prepares the panel for the following filler or coating layers.

Aerosol etch primer

Mipa Etch Primer Spray gives a spray can adhesion method for smaller aluminium or bare metal areas. It is useful when the work area is local and controlled.

Epoxy primer protection

Mipa EP Primer Surfacer with the matching EP hardener and EP thinner gives direct adhesion and corrosion protection on prepared steel, aluminium or zinc. It is the stronger primer method for bare or sensitive metal.

Primer filler base

Mipa 2K Acrylic Primer Filler and Mipa Fast Filler Spray build a sandable base over repaired or keyed areas. They help level small scratches and sanding marks before the colour layer.

Basecoat colour layer

Mipa BC Ready Mixed Two Layer Basecoat creates the matched colour layer on the prepared panel, while Mipa BC Thinner VDG supports the spray viscosity required by the BC system.

Clearcoat protection

Mipa 2K HS Clearcoat CC 8, Mipa 2K HS Hardener HS 25 normal and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25 form the gloss and protection layer after the basecoat has flashed.

Colour and surface checking

MP ColourCheck Spray helps assess the colour and finish before the final clearcoat decision. Mipa Control Spray helps reveal sanding marks and low spots while the surface is still easy to correct.

Flat sanding support

The MP sanding block keeps hand pressure even across the repair area, panel edge and primer surface. A flat block helps avoid waves that become more visible after gloss clearcoat.

How to paint aluminium car body panels

  1. 1
    Clean and assess the surface

Remove wax, grease, dust and loose contamination from the aluminium panel. Check whether the existing coating is sound enough to sand, or whether deeper repair work is needed first.

  2. 2
    Sand and refine

Key the surface evenly and remove sanding dust before coating. Use guide or colour checking where it helps reveal scratches, low spots or uneven preparation.

  3. 3
    Prime and sand the base

Apply the suitable primer or primer filler for the exposed substrate and repair depth, then sand the dried primer until the surface is smooth enough for colour.

  4. 4
    Apply the colour layer

Apply the matched colour in controlled coats over the prepared base. Keep the repair edge soft so the new colour can visually blend with the surrounding finish.

  5. 5
    Finish with clearcoat

Apply the compatible clearcoat system after the colour layer has flashed. Let the coating cure before polishing or putting the panel back into normal use.

Which aluminium primer method should you choose?

Wash primer method

Use Mipa Active Primer 2K Wash Primer with Hardener WPZ when the aluminium panel needs a dedicated adhesion primer before the filler or colour build.

Aerosol etch method

Use Mipa Etch Primer Spray for smaller aluminium areas where a controlled spray can adhesion primer is the practical option.

Epoxy primer method

Use EP Primer Surfacer where the job needs epoxy primer protection and the selected system method allows it.

Technical details

  • Mipa Active Primer is designed as a chromate free adhesion primer for aluminium and other non ferrous metal work.
  • Use Hardener WPZ only with the Active Primer stage. Clearcoats need their own matching hardeners so each layer can cure correctly.
  • EP Primer Surfacer supports direct adhesion and corrosion protection on prepared aluminium, steel and zinc.
  • Basecoat and clearcoat should only follow after the primer method has dried and been prepared correctly.
Practical suggestion

Keep aluminium freshly sanded and clean before primer. Fingerprints and oxide film can reduce adhesion faster than many painters expect.
