Repair and paint a cracked plastic bumper

Plastic bumper crack repair

Guide to bonding and painting a cracked plastic bumper

A cracked bumper needs a stronger repair sequence than a surface scrape. The crack must be cleaned, bonded, levelled with flexible material, primed for plastic and finished with colour and clearcoat so the repair is sealed and presentable.

What do you need to repair a cracked plastic bumper?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover and Mipa silicone remover spray remove wax, grease and silicone before sanding, filling, primer or coating work starts.

Crack bonding

MP 2K-PU adhesive ME 3.5 min. bonds the cracked plastic area quickly and comes with mixing nozzles for a controlled two component repair.

Flexible contour filling

Mipa P 35 Elastic levels the repaired crack line and helps rebuild bumper contours before sanding and primer.

Sanding and surface checking

MP Sanding Sponge follows bumper curves without cutting hard edges, while Mipa Control Spray reveals low spots, pinholes and sanding marks before primer.

Plastic primer filler

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler Spray and the 1l version help fill fine sanding marks and create a paint ready base on common automotive plastics.

Clearcoat protection

Mipa 2K Clearcoat Spray suits smaller clear-over-base repairs, while Mipa 2K-HS Clearcoat CC 8 with HS 10 hardener suits spray-gun finishing on larger or repeated jobs.

How to repair and paint a cracked plastic bumper

  1. 1
    Clean the repair zone

Degrease both sides of the cracked area and remove residue so the adhesive and filler bond to prepared plastic.

  2. 2
    Bond the crack

Align the crack carefully and use the 2K-PU adhesive to stabilise the damage before shaping the visible face.

  3. 3
    Level the contour

Apply flexible filler where the repaired line needs smoothing, then sand with a sponge so the bumper shape stays natural.

  4. 4
    Prime and paint

Use control spray for the final surface check, apply plastic primer filler and then apply the matched colour coat.

  5. 5
    Seal with clearcoat

Finish the repaired colour area with 2K clearcoat and let the system cure before reassembly or washing.

Which cracked bumper repair method should you choose?

Structural crack first

A visible crack needs adhesive repair before cosmetic filling, because filler alone is for shape correction rather than bonding the split plastic.

Small repair or larger refinishing

Aerosol clearcoat is practical for smaller zones, while CC 8 clearcoat with hardener gives a spray-gun method for larger bumper sections.

Technical details

  • MP 2K-PU adhesive ME 3.5 min. is the bonding stage for cracked plastic before filling and coating.
  • Mipa P 35 Elastic is used after bonding to shape the visible contour on overpaintable plastic.
  • Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler helps create a uniform primer surface before the colour coat.
  • Control spray should be sanded away during checking and is not a final coating.
  • The clearcoat stage must match the chosen refinish method so the colour coat receives proper gloss and protection.
Practical suggestion

Repair the crack before making the surface look smooth; a cosmetic finish over an unstable split will show again after movement or vibration.
