Paint alloy or steel wheels

Wheel refinishing

Guide to painting alloy or steel wheels

Alloy and steel wheels need more than colour. Brake dust, road film and old coating must be cleaned, keyed and primed before wheel silver is applied, otherwise the finish can fail quickly around spokes, rims and edges.

What do you need to paint alloy or steel wheels?

Wheel cleaning before paint

MP Wheel-Pro Cleaner removes heavy rim dirt, brake dust and road deposits before the coating preparation starts. Starting with a dedicated wheel cleaner keeps sanding pads and degreasers from doing the first dirty cleaning job.

Final degreasing

Mipa silicone remover liquid or spray removes grease, wax and silicone after sanding and before primer or colour. This final cleaning step helps the primer and wheel finish sit on a cleaner surface.

Primer filler layer

Mipa Rapidfiller or Mipa Rapidfiller Spray prepares the wheel surface where sanding marks, small imperfections or bare metal edges need a filled primer layer. Beige and dark grey options help choose a ground shade before the final silver finish.

Wheel silver finish

Mipa Wheel Silver Spray 400 ml is the specified silver aerosol for prepared steel and aluminium rims. It gives a fast practical wheel finish for refreshed or repaired wheels.

Flexible sanding sponge

MP Sanding Sponge helps scuff spokes, rim edges and curved recesses where flat abrasive sheets lose contact. Medium grades give better control around shaped wheel surfaces.

How to paint alloy or steel wheels

  1. 1
    Clean the wheel thoroughly

Remove brake dust and road film with wheel cleaner before sanding so contamination is not rubbed deeper into the surface.

  2. 2
Sand and scuff all coating areas

Use the sanding sponge on spokes, edges and recesses until glossy old paint is keyed and weak coating has been removed.

  3. 3
    Degrease before primer

Wipe or spray with silicone remover after sanding dust is cleared so the primer filler can bond to a clean surface.

  4. 4
    Prime and smooth the repair

Use Rapidfiller where the wheel needs filling, adhesion support or a uniform ground before colour. Let it dry and smooth it as needed before the wheel finish.

  5. 5
Apply wheel silver in light coats

Spray several controlled coats of wheel silver rather than one heavy coat, keeping coverage even around spokes and rim edges.

Which wheel preparation products should you choose?

Use Rapidfiller for damaged or sanded wheels

Rapidfiller is the better method when sanding marks, bare edges or small repaired zones need a filled primer surface before silver.

Use wheel silver after the surface is ready

Wheel Silver Spray belongs at the finishing stage. It should follow cleaning, sanding and suitable primer work rather than covering dirt, dust or weak old coating.

Technical details

  • Mipa lists Wheel Silver Spray as a fast drying and weather resistant special paint for wheel rims and vehicle parts.
  • Mipa Rapidfiller is a 1K primer filler with active corrosion protection and adhesion on iron, steel, zinc, aluminium and prepared recoatable plastics.
  • Wheel cleaner removes brake dust and road deposits before paint preparation, so sanding and degreasing start from a cleaner rim surface.
  • Mipa Wheel Silver Spray is a 400 ml aerosol in alu silver for wheel refinishing work.
Practical suggestion

Paint wheels off the vehicle whenever possible. The result is cleaner because the inner edges, spokes and rim lips can be cleaned, sanded and sprayed without fighting tyre, brake or bodywork masking.
