Paint motorcycle fairings, covers and mudguards

Motorcycle painted plastic bodywork

Guide to painting motorcycle fairings, covers and mudguards

Motorcycle fairings, covers and mudguards need careful cleaning, sanding, plastic adhesion support, matched basecoat and durable clearcoat. The finish has to handle vibration, sunlight, washing and road use while matching the rest of the bike.

What do you need to paint motorcycle fairings, covers and mudguards?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes grease, polish residue and silicone before sanding, plastic primer, basecoat or clearcoat.

Sanding and surface keying

The MP Sanding Pad prepares stable plastic or old coating so primer and paint can grip instead of sitting on a smooth surface.

Plastic adhesion primer

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer and Mipa Plastic Primer Spray support adhesion on suitable motorcycle plastic parts before the colour system starts.

Basecoat colour layer

Mipa BC Ready Mixed with BC Thinner VDG creates the matched two layer colour stage for the motorcycle panel.

Spray gun clearcoat

Mipa 2K-HS Clearcoat CS 90 with HS Hardener HS 10 gives a scratch resistant 2K clearcoat method for larger fairing sets.

Aerosol clearcoat

Mipa 2K Clearcoat Spray high gloss gives a practical 2K clearcoat format for smaller covers, mudguards and isolated panels.

How to paint motorcycle fairings, covers and mudguards

  1. 1
    Remove and clean the parts

Remove trim where practical, wash the panels, then degrease the paint area before sanding starts.

  2. 2
    Sand the surface

Key the stable plastic or old coating evenly and remove sanding dust before primer.

  3. 3
    Apply plastic primer

Apply the plastic adhesion primer lightly on suitable plastic surfaces before the colour stage.

  4. 4
    Apply the colour layer

Apply Mipa BC Ready Mixed with BC Thinner VDG in controlled coats and let the basecoat flash to a matt finish before clearcoat.

  5. 5
    Seal with clearcoat

Finish with the chosen 2K clearcoat method and let the coating cure before refitting clips, grommets and panels.

Which clearcoat method should you use?

Spray gun clearcoat

Choose CS 90 with HS 10 hardener for larger fairing sets and a controlled spray gun process.

Aerosol clearcoat

Choose Mipa 2K Clearcoat Spray high gloss for smaller covers, mudguards and individual motorcycle parts.

Plastic adhesion method

Use the plastic primer stage before colour when the part is a suitable plastic substrate rather than prepared metal.

Technical details

  • Mipa 1K Plastic Primer is an adhesion primer for many common automotive plastics such as ABS, PC, PP EPDM, PUR and PVC.
  • Mipa BC basecoat is applied as the colour layer and must be protected with a compatible Mipa 2K clearcoat after flash off.
  • Mipa 2K-HS Clearcoat CS 90 is a scratch resistant HS clearcoat for high quality partial or complete paintwork.
  • Plastic parts must be cleaned, sanded and dried thoroughly before plastic primer is applied.
Practical suggestion

Paint removed parts in a clean and dust controlled area. Keep plastic primer light, build colour separately from clearcoat and allow cure time before rubber mounts, clips or fasteners press against the fresh finish.
