Motorcycle scratch repair and repainting

Guide to repairing and painting scratched motorcycle bodywork

Scratched motorcycle bodywork needs controlled surface preparation before the colour and clearcoat are rebuilt. The aim is to level the scratch, restore primer support where needed, then refinish the part with matched basecoat and protective clearcoat.

What do you need to repair and paint scratched motorcycle bodywork?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover removes grease, silicone and polishing residue before sanding and again before coating.

Controlled hand sanding

MP Hand Block Soft helps level the scratch area without adding finger grooves or uneven pressure marks.

Plastic adhesion support

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer and Plastic Primer Spray support adhesion when sanded plastic areas are exposed during the repair.

Primer filler and levelling

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler and Mipa 2K Multifiller help fill shallow marks or stronger repair areas before colour.

Basecoat colour layer

Mipa BC Ready Mixed with BC Thinner VDG restores the matched colour stage after the repair area is properly prepared.

Clearcoat protection

Mipa 2K-HS Clearcoat CS 90 or Mipa 2K Clearcoat Spray protects the basecoat and restores gloss over the repaired area.

How to repair and paint scratched motorcycle bodywork

  1. 1
    Clean the repair zone

Degrease the scratched area so sanding does not drive wax, silicone or polish into the repair.

  2. 2
    Level the scratch

Sand the damaged area with controlled hand pressure and feather the edges into the stable surrounding finish.

  3. 3
    Prime or fill the repair

Use plastic primer, plastic primer filler or 2K multifiller according to the scratch depth and exposed substrate.

  4. 4
    Apply matched basecoat

Apply the Mipa BC basecoat after the primed repair has dried and been prepared for colour.

  5. 5
    Clearcoat the panel

Seal the basecoat with the chosen 2K clearcoat method and allow the finish to cure before handling.

Which scratch repair method should you choose?

Light scratched plastic

Use plastic primer filler when the scratch is shallow and the surface needs adhesion and light filling support.

Deeper levelling repair

Use Mipa 2K Multifiller with its hardener and thinner when the repair needs stronger build before colour.

Small aerosol repair

Use plastic primer spray and 2K clearcoat spray when the part and repair area are small enough for aerosol refinishing.

Technical details

  • Mipa 1K Plastic Primer supports adhesion on many common automotive plastics after thorough cleaning and sanding.
  • Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler adds filling support for suitable plastic repair surfaces before colour.
  • Mipa BC basecoat should flash correctly and then receive a compatible Mipa 2K clearcoat.
  • Basecoat alone will not hide an unlevelled scratch, so surface shape must be corrected before colour.
Practical suggestion

Use the smallest repair area that still lets the scratch be fully feathered and levelled. Reclean after sanding and before basecoat. On visible motorcycle panels, clearcoat to a logical panel edge where possible for a cleaner gloss transition.
