Paint trailer chassis and exposed steel parts

Trailer chassis and exposed steel parts with EP primer and chassis paint

Guide to painting a trailer chassis and exposed steel parts

A trailer chassis or exposed steel part needs more than a quick colour coat. Loose rust, grease and weak coating must be removed first, then prepared metal can be protected with an EP primer and finished with Mipa PU 265-50 semi-gloss chassis paint.

What do you need to paint a trailer chassis and exposed steel parts?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover and Mipa silicone remover spray colourless 400 ml remove grease, wax and road film before sanding, priming or chassis paint.

Sanding preparation

MP Sanding Sponge keys stable old coating, weld edges, brackets and accessible steel surfaces so the next layer can grip.

EP primer system

Mipa EP 100-20 2K EP primer creates the corrosion protective primer base on prepared exposed metal. Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner belong with this stage.

Chassis paint

Mipa PU 265-50 2K PU HS Industry chassis paint creates the semi-gloss finish on prepared chassis and exposed steel parts.

Chassis paint components

Mipa PU 912-25 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25 belong with the liquid PU chassis paint stage when required by the coating setup.

How to paint a trailer chassis and exposed steel parts

  1. 1
    Clean the steel

Wash away dirt and allow the chassis to dry, then wipe the prepared area with silicone remover.

  2. 2
    Remove weak material

Remove loose rust, flaking paint and unstable coating before sanding the remaining stable surface.

  3. 3
    Key the coating area

Use the sanding sponge to dull old paint, weld edges and brackets, then clean away dust.

  4. 4
    Prime exposed metal

Apply the EP primer system to prepared bare or exposed steel areas before chassis paint.

  5. 5
    Apply chassis paint

Finish with Mipa PU 265-50 chassis paint and keep threads, bearings, brake parts and moving joints clear.

Which chassis painting method should you choose?

EP primer plus chassis paint

Use this build when bare steel or exposed prepared metal needs a primer base before the semi-gloss chassis finish.

Local chassis refresh

On sound old coating, clean and sand thoroughly before deciding whether exposed areas need EP primer before topcoat.

Serviceable parts stay clear

Mask threads, brake parts, couplings, labels, drain holes and moving joints so the coating protects without blocking function.

Technical details

  • Mipa PU 265-50 is listed for chassis paint work in a 2K PU HS semi-gloss coating role.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 is an epoxy primer for steel, zinced steel, aluminium and other listed substrates.
  • Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner belong with the EP primer stage.
  • Mipa PU 912-25 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25 belong with the chassis paint stage.
Practical suggestion

Do not coat over thick rust scale. Chassis work lasts longer when loose rust and flaking paint are removed first, even if that means the job takes more cleaning and sanding time before primer.
