Guide to painting interior wooden trim and skirting

Interior wooden trim and skirting boards collect dust, knocks and cleaning marks along walls and floors. The right method starts with careful cleaning and sanding, then a satin matt or gloss waterborne alkyd finish.

What do you need to paint interior wooden trim and skirting?

WBS cleaning

Mipa WBS Cleaner prepares the surface inside the waterborne system, removing contamination that can disturb flow, adhesion or the final look.

Waterborne viscosity adjustment

Mipa WBS deionised water is the dedicated thinner for the WBS finish, used only when the coating needs controlled adjustment for brushing, rolling or spraying.

Satin matt alkyd finish

Mipa WAK 2500-30 gives an easy brushing waterborne alkyd finish with strong levelling for interior and exterior woodwork when a softer satin matt result is preferred.

Gloss alkyd finish

Mipa WAK 2500-90 gives a smooth glossy waterborne alkyd finish for woodwork, primed metal and sound old coatings where a brighter, more washable surface is wanted.

How to paint interior wooden trim and skirting

  1. 1
    Protect the room

Mask floors, wall edges and nearby surfaces before cleaning or sanding narrow trim pieces.

  2. 2
    Clean the trim

Use Mipa WBS Cleaner to remove dust film, grease and old cleaning residue from skirting, architraves and trim edges.

  3. 3
    Sand for adhesion

Lightly sand the old finish or prepared wood, then remove dust from grooves, corners and the top edge of skirting boards.

  4. 4
    Apply the finish

Use Mipa WAK 2500-30 for satin matt or Mipa WAK 2500-90 for gloss, applying smooth thin coats with a suitable brush or small roller.

  5. 5
    Keep edges clean

Remove masking at the right time and avoid heavy cleaning until the finish has hardened.

Which trim and skirting finish should you choose?

Choose satin matt

Mipa WAK 2500-30 is a good fit when trim should look softer and less reflective beside walls and flooring.

Choose gloss

Mipa WAK 2500-90 is the stronger visual choice when the room calls for a classic glossy skirting or door trim finish.

Use cleaner before sanding

Mipa WBS Cleaner helps remove the dust, polish and residue that often sits on skirting tops and near floor edges.

Technical details

  • Mipa WAK 2500 is a waterborne alkyd finish for interior and exterior use with strong brushing and levelling behaviour.
  • Skirting board top edges collect dust and must be cleaned before sanding and coating.
  • Gloss finishes show surface defects more clearly, so sanding and dust removal need to be especially careful.
  • Mipa WBS deionised water is the compatible thinner only when WBS viscosity adjustment is needed.
Practical suggestion

Start with the longest wall runs and finish with short returns and corners. This keeps the visible strokes more consistent and makes touch control easier.
