Guide to painting wooden doors and frames

Wooden doors and frames need clean edges, smooth profiles and a finish that resists regular handling. This method uses waterborne alkyd finishes for a satin matt or gloss result on prepared interior woodwork.

What do you need to paint wooden doors and frames?

WBS cleaning

Mipa WBS Cleaner prepares the surface inside the waterborne system, removing contamination that can disturb flow, adhesion or the final look.

Waterborne viscosity adjustment

Mipa WBS deionised water is the dedicated thinner for the WBS finish, used only when the coating needs controlled adjustment for brushing, rolling or spraying.

Satin matt alkyd finish

Mipa WAK 2500-30 gives an easy brushing waterborne alkyd finish with strong levelling for interior and exterior woodwork when a softer satin matt result is preferred.

Gloss alkyd finish

Mipa WAK 2500-90 gives a smooth glossy waterborne alkyd finish for woodwork, primed metal and sound old coatings where a brighter, more washable surface is wanted.

How to paint wooden doors and frames

  1. 1
    Remove or mask hardware

Take off handles and hinges where practical, or mask them carefully before cleaning and sanding.

  2. 2
    Clean high contact zones

Use Mipa WBS Cleaner around handles, frame edges and latch areas where grease and repeated touch marks collect.

  3. 3
    Sand profiles and faces

Sand flat faces, mouldings and frame rebates to a firm key, then remove dust from corners and edges.

  4. 4
    Apply the alkyd finish

Use Mipa WAK 2500-30 for satin matt or Mipa WAK 2500-90 for gloss, working in thin controlled coats along the grain and profile direction.

  5. 5
    Let edges cure

Allow the coating to harden before closing the door firmly against seals, frame stops or newly painted rebates.

Which door and frame finish should you choose?

Satin matt for a softer look

Mipa WAK 2500-30 suits wooden doors and frames where less reflection and a calmer finish are preferred.

Gloss for stronger shine

Mipa WAK 2500-90 suits doors, frames and trim where a brighter glossy surface and easier wipe-down feel are wanted.

Cleaner for handle zones

Mipa WBS Cleaner is especially useful around handles and latch sides because contamination there can affect adhesion.

Technical details

  • Mipa WAK 2500 is a high-quality waterborne alkyd paint for interior and exterior use with easy brushing and excellent levelling.
  • Mipa WAK 2500-30 is satin matt and Mipa WAK 2500-90 is gloss, both supplied as 5 kg price group variants.
  • Door edges and frame rebates should not be closed against fresh coating before the film has hardened.
  • Use Mipa WBS deionised water only for compatible waterborne viscosity adjustment.
Practical suggestion

Paint frame rebates thinly and let them dry properly. Heavy coating in the closing edge can stick, mark or make the door feel tight.
