Bicycle frame painting

Guide to painting a bicycle frame

A bicycle frame needs a coating system that can handle curves, joints, handling and outdoor use. The work starts with disassembly and cleaning, then moves through sanding, epoxy primer and a compatible 2K colour finish.

What do you need to paint a bicycle frame?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes grease, wax and handling residue before frame sanding and painting.

Hand block sanding

MP Hand Block Soft helps prepare tubes, welded areas and flat sections with controlled pressure.

Epoxy primer surfacer

Mipa EP Primer Surfacer with Mipa EP hardener E 5 extra short builds adhesion and corrosion protection on suitable prepared metal areas.

Activated primer filler spray

Mipa 2K-EP Primer Filler Spray gives a compact activated primer method for small frame areas and local refinishing.

Custom 2K aerosol colour

Mipa 2K Prefilled Spray can be filled with compatible 2K paint for frame colour work in a compact aerosol format.

Ready mixed 2K topcoat

Mipa OC Ready Mixed Tones RM with compatible Mipa hardener and thinner creates a direct gloss 2K colour finish for the frame.

How to paint a bicycle frame

  1. 1
    Strip for access

Remove components, protect threads and mask bearing seats so paint does not enter functional areas.

  2. 2
    Clean before sanding

Degrease first, then sand the existing coating or prepared metal to create a uniform keyed surface.

  3. 3
    Prime the frame

Apply the epoxy primer method where the surface needs adhesion, corrosion protection or primer filler support.

  4. 4
    Apply colour

Use the 2K prefilled aerosol or OC ready mixed tone method for the chosen colour finish.

  5. 5
    Cure before assembly

Let the coating cure before installing parts, clamps or cables against the new surface.

Which bicycle frame coating method should you choose?

For a compact custom colour job

Use the 2K prefilled spray method when a small frame project needs real 2K paint without setting up a spray gun.

For a spray gun finish

Use the OC ready mixed tone method when the frame needs a direct gloss 2K finish with stronger control over application.

For exposed or repaired metal

Use the epoxy primer method before colour so the frame has a stable foundation under the finish.

Technical details

  • Bicycle frames have many edges, tube joints and clamp areas, so thin even coats are safer than heavy coats.
  • EP Primer Surfacer is an epoxy primer filler with direct adhesion on suitable metal substrates in vehicle refinishing use.
  • Mipa 2K Prefilled Spray has an integrated hardener package and a limited pot life after activation.
  • Masking threads, bearing seats and contact points prevents coating thickness from interfering with reassembly.
Practical suggestion

Plan hanging points before mixing or activating coatings. A bicycle frame must be reachable from all sides without touching the fresh paint.
