Guide to painting wooden shelving with a smooth silk matt finish

Wooden shelving needs a clean, lightly keyed surface and a finish that levels neatly without making the shelves look heavy. This guide focuses on indoor wooden shelves where a tidy silk matt coating, careful dust removal and correct water based thinning matter more than aggressive build.

What do you need to paint wooden shelving?

Water based cleaning

Mipa WBS Cleaner is used before coating work to remove contamination that can disturb adhesion on prepared wood and existing sound finishes.

Clean thinning water

Mipa WBS deionised water is the correct thinning and processing water for the specified WBS wood finish where adjustment is needed.

Silk matt wood finish

Mipa WPA 2100-40 is a water based 1K PU acrylic finish for common wood types, suitable for brushing, rolling, curtain coating or flow coating.

How to paint wooden shelving

  1. 1
    Empty and clean the shelf

Remove objects, adhesive residue and dust, then clean the surface so grease and old polish cannot sit under the new coating.

  2. 2
    Key the surface evenly

Matte down glossy old paint or varnish with fine abrasive work and remove all sanding dust before applying the finish.

  3. 3
    Adjust the coating correctly

Use Mipa WBS deionised water only where the WBS finish needs approved adjustment for brushing or rolling.

  4. 4
    Apply thin controlled coats

Brush or roll along the shelf length and keep edges light so paint does not gather on corners or shelf fronts.

  5. 5
    Let shelves harden before loading

Allow the finish to dry and harden before books, boxes or decorative objects are placed back on the shelves.

Which shelving finish should you choose?

For indoor wooden shelves

Choose WPA 2100-40 when the job needs a clean silk matt finish on common wood surfaces with brush or roller application.

For old painted shelving

Keep old paint only when it is sound, well adhered and evenly sanded, then clean before coating.

Technical details

  • Mipa WPA 2100-40 is listed by Mipa as a water based 1K PU acrylic topcoat for common wood types.
  • Mipa lists brush, roller, curtain and flow coating as application methods for WPA 2100-40.
  • Mipa WBS deionised water is the specified thinner for WPA 2100-40.
  • Shelves should be fully dry before loading because pressure marks can form when objects are placed back too soon.
Practical suggestion

Paint loose shelves flat on supports when possible. That makes the front edge easier to coat cleanly and reduces runs on the underside.
