Mipa EP 170-20 builds a zinc-rich 2K epoxy primer layer for long-term cathodic corrosion protection on steel. The coating is intended for bare, completely rust-free steel that has been blasted to Sa 2½. EP 170-20 creates the active zinc dust layer at the start of a heavy-duty protective coating system, where the steel surface needs durable protection before intermediate and finishing coats are applied.
EP 170-20 is polyamide-cured and grey-green in colour. The coating carries German Armed Forces TL 8010-0012 class A type 4 approval and is used in corrosion protection systems where steel preparation and coating sequence are critical. The material is mixed 24:1 by weight with Mipa EP 980-25 and reduced with Mipa EP-Thinner 971 when adjustment is required for the application equipment.
The zinc dust layer supports very high active corrosion protection. After application at 20 °C, EP 170-20 can be recoated from 30 minutes and remains recoatable up to 7 days under the documented technical conditions. A typical steel build uses EP 170-20 as the priming coat, followed by an epoxy intermediate coat such as EP 175-20 and a compatible PU finishing coat such as PU 246 or PU 249.
EP 170-20 also supports electrostatic application and offers permanent heat resistance up to 400 °C. The coating belongs in demanding steel protection work where the primer layer must bond to a correctly prepared blasted substrate and carry the corrosion protection function inside the coating build.
