Clearcoat a carbon bicycle part

Carbon bicycle clearcoat

Guide to clearcoating a carbon bicycle part

A carbon bicycle part needs a clear finish that protects the visible weave without adding unnecessary material or damaging the fibre surface. The safest method is careful cleaning, very controlled sanding and a compatible 2K clearcoat.

What do you need to clearcoat a carbon bicycle part?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes wax, grease and polish residue before clearcoat preparation.

Carbon sanding block

MP fine grinding block Carbon supports precise hand preparation on compact carbon bicycle parts and shaped details.

Carbon clearcoat system

Mipa 2K-HS Carbonic Clearcoat with Mipa 2K-HS Hardener HS 25 normal gives a high-build clearcoat method for synthetic fibre substrates.

Activated clearcoat spray

Mipa 2K Clearcoat Spray high gloss gives a compact aerosol clearcoat option for small carbon bicycle parts.

How to clearcoat a carbon bicycle part

  1. 1
    Remove the part

Take the carbon part off the bicycle where possible so edges, mounting faces and curves are accessible.

  2. 2
    Clean before sanding

Remove polish, wax and hand oils before the abrasive block touches the surface.

  3. 3
    Sand with light pressure

Prepare the existing clear layer evenly while avoiding exposed fibres, raised weave and sharp edges.

  4. 4
    Clean and inspect

Remove dust and check that the surface is clean, sound and ready for clearcoat.

  5. 5
    Apply the clearcoat

Use the Carbonic Clearcoat method or the activated clearcoat spray method, then let the coating cure before fitting.

Which carbon bicycle clearcoat should you choose?

For premium carbon work

Choose Mipa 2K-HS Carbonic Clearcoat when a dedicated clearcoat for synthetic fibre substrates is preferred.

For small detachable parts

Choose Mipa 2K Clearcoat Spray when the part is compact and aerosol application gives enough control.

For fragile edges

Use conservative sanding and avoid excessive build around clamp zones and mounting surfaces.

Technical details

  • Mipa 2K-HS Carbonic Clearcoat is described for clearcoat application on synthetic fibre substrates and provides high UV protection.
  • The carbon part must be structurally sound before any clearcoat repair or recoating work starts.
  • Raised weave, exposed fibre or delamination should not be hidden under clearcoat.
  • Clearcoat near clamps and bolts should be allowed to cure fully before the part is tightened back onto the bicycle.
Practical suggestion

Photograph the part under strong light before sanding. It helps track scratches, cloudy areas and exposed edges during preparation.
