Guide to coating wooden stairs with a safer durable finish

Wooden stairs need stronger planning than a decorative wood panel because every tread is walked on. This guide separates surface preparation, anti slip coating and lower wear trim areas so the finish gives useful grip where feet land and a clean silk matt result where grip texture is not needed.

What do you need to coat wooden stairs?

Sanding sponge

MP Sanding Sponge helps key treads, risers, nosings and corners before the coating system is applied.

Clean thinning water

Mipa WBS deionised water supports approved adjustment of the WBS acrylic finish used on suitable wooden stair parts.

Anti slip stair coating

Mipa PU 350-50 is a 2K polyurethane acrylic anti slip paint with R 11 classification for walkable surfaces.

Hardener and thinner for 2K coating

Mipa PU 912-10 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25 support the specified 2K anti slip coating stage.

Silk matt wood finish

Mipa WPA 2100-40 can be used on suitable wooden stair parts where a water based silk matt finish is needed instead of grip texture.

How to coat wooden stairs

  1. 1
    Plan access before painting

Work alternate treads or arrange another method so the fresh coating is not walked on during drying.

  2. 2
    Sand the walking surfaces

Key treads and nosings evenly and remove dust from corners where coating can collect.

  3. 3
    Mix the 2K stage accurately

Prepare the PU 350-50 anti slip coating with the specified hardener and thinner according to the technical data.

  4. 4
Coat treads with grip in mind

Brush or roll the anti slip coating in even coats and keep the edge profile visible rather than flooded.

  5. 5
Use silk matt finish only on suitable areas

Apply WPA 2100-40 on risers, stringers or lower wear wooden areas when a smoother silk matt finish is preferred.

Which stair coating product should you choose?

For treads and nosings

Choose PU 350-50 where grip and wear resistance are the main concern.

For risers and side pieces

Choose WPA 2100-40 where the surface is wood, the area is lower wear and a smooth silk matt look is preferred.

For 2K work

Mix only the amount of 2K coating that can be applied within the working time of the system.

Practical suggestion

For a usable staircase, mark every second tread and coat in two phases. This avoids stepping on uncured coating and keeps the finish cleaner.
