Guide to painting playground metal frames

Playground metal frames need careful preparation, strong adhesion and sensible product choice because coated parts are touched, climbed on and exposed to weather.

What do you need to paint playground metal frames?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes contamination before abrasive work and coating work starts.

Fine sanding before coating

MP Fine sanding pad helps key old paint, smooth edges and reach shaped metal before primer or final colour is applied.

Epoxy primer for strong adhesion

Mipa EP 100-20 with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner gives steel and other suitable metals a 2K epoxy primer stage.

High strain polyurethane finish

Mipa PU 240-50 in price groups I, II and III creates the semi gloss 2K PU finish, used with Mipa PU 912-25 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25.

2K spray finish for smaller parts

Mipa Mix PU 240 2K Paint Spray 48+ is the practical spray option for smaller repairs, bars, brackets and difficult shapes where a gun mix is too much.

How to paint playground metal frames

  1. 1
    Inspect the frame first

Check for sharp edges, loose coating, rust, damaged welds and unsafe parts before any cleaning or coating work begins.

  2. 2
    Clean and sand the metal

Degrease with Mipa silicone remover, then sand old paint and remove loose rust until the surface is stable.

  3. 3
    Prime exposed metal

Apply Mipa EP 100-20 with the correct hardener and thinner on prepared bare metal before the final colour.

  4. 4
    Apply the colour finish

Use Mipa PU 240-50 or Mipa Mix PU 240 2K Paint Spray 48+ in controlled coats so bars, corners and underside areas are covered.

  5. 5
    Cure and safety check

Let the coating harden fully, then check the frame again before use so no sharp coating edges, loose parts or unsafe surfaces remain.

Which playground frame coating products should you choose?

Use the high strain finish method

Mipa PU 240-50 is the stronger 2K PU finish method for frames that face handling and outdoor exposure.

Use spray for small repairs

Mipa Mix PU 240 2K Paint Spray 48+ is useful for local bars, repaired sections and smaller frame areas.

Check safety rules first

Public playground frames can be subject to local safety and coating requirements, so the specification must be checked before work starts.

Technical details

  • Mipa PU 240-50 is the main semi gloss 2K PU finish for playground metal frames; it is matched with Mipa PU 912-25 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 is the 2K epoxy primer stage for steel, zinced steel, aluminium and GRP when the substrate and preparation match the technical data.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 must be combined with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner for the epoxy primer stage.
  • Mipa Mix PU 240 2K Paint Spray 48+ is the small format 2K colour option for local work and complex shapes.
  • Public or safety critical metalwork requires checking local coating, access and safety requirements before the work starts.
Practical suggestion

Do not coat over structural damage, sharp corrosion or loose hardware. Repair the frame first, then clean, sand, prime and paint.
