Guide to repainting powder coated metal fencing

Powder coated metal fencing can be repainted only after the old surface is cleaned, keyed and primed correctly. This guide uses paint stripper where old coating is failing, then Mipa WEP 1000-20 and Mipa PU 250-50 for the repaint method.

What do you need to repaint powder coated metal fencing?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid format or Mipa silicone remover spray removes grease, dirt and handling residue before sanding, priming or topcoating.

Old coating removal

Mipa Quick paint stripper and Mipa Paint Stripper Spray help remove failing paint or coating layers before the new system is built.

Surface keying

MP Sanding Sponge prepares corners, bars and detailed metal surfaces so the next coating layer has a clean mechanical profile.

Water based epoxy primer

Mipa WEP 1000-20 with Mipa WEP 9500-25 hardener and Mipa WBS deionised water prepares galvanized, aluminium or difficult coated metal for the topcoat stage.

Aerosol primer for detail areas

Mipa 1K Epoxy Primer Spray supports smaller metal sections and detailed fence areas before the final coating method.

Semi gloss PU topcoat

Mipa PU 250-50 in the relevant price groups gives the fence or railing a durable semi gloss industrial finish in the chosen colour method.

Topcoat components

Mipa PUR Plus Hardener A60 and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25 are used in the PU topcoat stage and help the final coating cure and apply correctly.

How to repaint powder coated metal fencing

  1. 1
    Wash and degrease

Clean the powder coated metal fence thoroughly so dirt, oils and surface contamination do not reduce adhesion.

  2. 2
    Remove loose material

Strip failing paint, remove loose rust or key the existing surface so only a stable base remains for primer.

  3. 3
    Prime the substrate

Use the epoxy primer method matched to the metal type before the final semi gloss coating is applied.

  4. 4
    Apply the PU finish

Apply Mipa PU 250-50 with the correct hardener and thinner so the final layer protects the prepared metal and gives an even semi gloss look.

  5. 5
    Respect drying before service

Let the powder coated metal fence cure before frequent touching, gate movement, cleaning or weather exposure becomes heavy.

Which powder coated metal repaint method should you choose?

Sound powder coating repaint

Clean, key and prime sound powder coated metal so the new coating has a mechanical and chemical base.

Failing coating removal

Use Quick paint stripper or Paint Stripper Spray where the old powder coating or paint is loose, chipped or lifting.

Epoxy primer before PU finish

Use WEP 1000-20 and then PU 250-50 so the new finish is built on a prepared primer stage.

Technical details

  • Mipa PU 250-50 is a 2K polyurethane acrylic semi gloss coating for high quality work on metal constructions.
  • Mipa PU 250-50 uses Mipa PUR Plus Hardener A60 and Mipa 2K Thinner for the listed topcoat method.
  • Mipa WEP 1000-20 is a water based 2K zinc phosphate epoxy primer for steel, zinc coated steel, aluminium and common plastics.
  • Mipa WEP 1000-20 can be brushed, rolled or sprayed and uses Mipa WEP 9500-25 hardener with Mipa WBS deionised water.
  • Powder coated metal needs cleaning, keying and a compatible primer because a slick old coating can cause adhesion failure.
Practical suggestion

Prepare one less visible part of the powder coated metal fence first and check adhesion, colour and sheen before coating the most visible faces.
