Restore and paint rusty metal chairs and tables

Guided rust repair

Products for restoring and painting rusty metal chairs and tables

Rusty metal chairs and tables need more than fresh colour. Old coating, loose corrosion and grease must be removed before primer and semi gloss finish are applied.

What do you need to restore rusty metal chairs and tables?

Old paint removal

Mipa Quick paint stripper and Mipa Paint Stripper Spray help remove old paint layers where sanding alone would leave weak coating behind.

Rust sealing on prepared areas

Mipa Rust Sealant SMP is used after loose rust has been removed, helping stabilise affected spots before primer or filler work continues.

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes grease, wax and silicone before sanding, primer or topcoat work starts.

Sanding and surface keying

MP Sanding Sponge helps dull old paint and smooth small edges so primer and finishing coats can grip the metal surface more evenly.

Epoxy primer for exposed metal

Mipa EP 100-20 with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner gives the metal a 2K epoxy primer stage before the decorative finish.

Spray primer for small areas

Mipa 1K Epoxy Primer Spray is useful for smaller rubbed through areas, corners and local repairs where a spray can is the practical primer format.

Semi gloss polyurethane finish

Mipa PU 250-50 in price groups I, II and III creates the semi gloss colour finish, used with Mipa PUR Plus Hardener A60 net and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25.

How to restore and paint rusty metal chairs and tables

  1. 1
    Remove loose paint and rust

Strip failed paint where needed, scrape weak edges and sand rust until the metal surface is stable enough for the next stage.

  2. 2
    Clean and degrease

Use Mipa silicone remover after heavy preparation so grease, stripper residue and sanding dust do not stay on the chair or table frame.

  3. 3
    Seal and prime exposed metal

Use Mipa Rust Sealant SMP on prepared rust spots, then apply the correct primer stage once the surface is ready.

  4. 4
    Apply the colour finish

Coat with Mipa PU 250-50 in controlled layers, paying attention to legs, undersides, welds and places where water can sit.

  5. 5
    Cure before use

Let the finish harden fully before the furniture is used, stacked or moved back outdoors.

Which rust repair and coating products should you choose?

Strip only where the old coating is weak

Use stripper for failing, thick or difficult paint layers; sound old coating can be sanded and cleaned instead.

Use rust sealant for prepared corrosion

Mipa Rust Sealant SMP belongs on rust affected areas after loose material is removed, not over dirt or flaky paint.

Use the 2K finish for outdoor durability

Mipa PU 250-50 over the primer stage gives the restored furniture a stronger finish than a simple decorative touch up.

Technical details

  • Mipa PU 250-50 is the main semi gloss 2K PU finish for rusty metal chairs and tables; it is matched with Mipa PUR Plus Hardener A60 net and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 is the 2K epoxy primer stage for steel, zinced steel, aluminium and GRP when the substrate and preparation match the technical data.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 must be used with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner, not with the PU topcoat hardener.
  • Mipa 1K Epoxy Primer Spray is a local spray primer option for smaller areas, edges and spot repairs.
  • Clean first, sand second and degrease again before coating so hidden grease is not trapped under the primer or finish.
  • Paint stripper work needs careful masking, ventilation and complete residue removal before primer is applied.
Practical suggestion

Check the underside of chair legs and table feet first. Rust often starts where metal touches paving, wet grass or damp storage floors.
