Guide to painting plastic planters and storage boxes

Plastic planters, tubs and storage boxes are smooth, handled often and easily contaminated by soil, water marks, waxes and household residues. A durable repaint starts with proper cleaning, a light surface key and a coating choice that suits hard plastic rather than ordinary wall paint.

What do you need to paint plastic planters and storage boxes?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover liquid or spray cleans hard plastic after normal washing. It helps remove grease, oil, wax and silicone before the surface is sanded or primed.

Fine scuffing pad

MP Non-woven Sanding Pad Very Fine red helps create a uniform matt key on smooth boxes, planter rims, corners and molded details.

Plastic adhesion primer

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer in spray or tin format is used as the adhesion bridge on many rigid plastics before the finish coat.

Primer filler for worn plastic

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler helps level fine scratches, weathering and shallow sanding marks when the planter or box needs a more even base.

Finish options for hard plastic

Mipa Plastic Paint Spray gives a matt plastic colour finish, while Mipa Bumper Paint Spray or Mipa Bumper Paint 1l gives a structured grey or black effect.

How to paint plastic planters and storage boxes

  1. 1
    Empty, wash and dry

Remove soil, dust, labels and loose residue. Dry the plastic fully, especially around rims, handles, ribs and drainage holes.

  2. 2
    Degrease the paintable area

Wipe with Mipa silicone remover after washing. Use clean cloths so the surface is not left with a greasy film before sanding.

  3. 3
    Create a light key

Use the red non-woven sanding pad to dull shiny plastic. Work around corners and molded ribs because paint often lifts first from sharp edges.

  4. 4
    Prime the prepared plastic

Apply Mipa 1K Plastic Primer as the adhesion layer. Choose primer filler when the old plastic has visible scuffs that need a smoother base.

  5. 5
Build the finish in thin coats

Apply the chosen plastic finish gradually. Keep planter rims, storage box lids and handle areas light enough that they still fit and close cleanly.

Which plastic planter or box finish should you choose?

Colour refresh

Mipa Plastic Paint Spray suits smaller planters, boxes and molded details when a matt plastic colour finish is wanted.

Structured effect

Mipa Bumper Paint Spray or Mipa Bumper Paint 1l suits grey or black textured effects on hard plastic boxes, tubs and utility containers.

Smoother worn surfaces

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler is useful before colour when scuff marks, scratches or aged plastic texture need to be reduced.

Technical details

  • Mipa silicone remover spray is a colourless cleaner for metallic and polymer materials and removes silicone, grease, oil, wax, dirt, tar and soot.
  • The red MP non-woven sanding pad is a very fine abrasive for controlled matting on plastic and other prepared surfaces.
  • Mipa 1K Plastic Primer is ready for plastic adhesion work and has a transparent silver application colour.
  • Mipa Plastic Paint Spray is available in plastic-oriented shades such as graphite grey, dark grey, black and basalt grey.
  • Planters and boxes that flex heavily, stay wet inside or rub against lids may need extra cure time and a hidden adhesion test before full use.
Practical suggestion

Paint removable lids, boxes and planters separately and keep contact edges light. A thick coating on a rim can make a storage box lid scrape the finish every time it closes.
