Small metal parts guide

Guide to painting small metal brackets, handles and hinges

Small brackets, handles and hinges need clean metal, a keyed surface and a coating method that can deal with edges, screw holes and hand contact. This guide keeps the work practical for small removable parts, from cleaning and sanding through primer and final 2K colour.

What do you need to paint small metal brackets, handles and hinges?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes wax, grease and handling residue before sanding, primer or colour work begins.

Sanding and keying

MP Sanding Pad gives small metal pieces an even matt surface so primer can grip around corners, holes and shaped edges.

Epoxy primer for metal

Mipa EP Primer Surfacer with Mipa EP hardener E 5 and Mipa 2K Thinner Short V 10 gives steel, aluminium and zinc a corrosion resistant primer layer before colour.

Aerosol primer option

Mipa 2K-EP Primer Filler Spray incl. hardener is useful for compact parts where a controlled aerosol primer layer is more practical than spray gun work.

Final 2K colour

Mipa OC Ready Mixed Tones RM can be used with Mipa 2K-HS Hardener HS 10 short and Mipa 2K Thinner Short V 10 for a durable colour finish.

Filled aerosol colour option

Mipa 2K Prefilled Spray can carry a compatible 2K topcoat into a small aerosol job while still using an activated 2K finish.

How to paint small metal brackets, handles and hinges

  1. 1
    Remove and clean the parts

Take small hardware off the object where possible, then clean every face with silicone remover so grease does not get sanded into the metal.

  2. 2
    Sand the surface evenly

Use the sanding pad to dull old paint, smooth light corrosion and create a uniform key around edges and mounting holes.

  3. 3
    Prime bare or mixed metal

Apply the epoxy primer method to exposed steel, aluminium or zinc, or use the 2K epoxy primer aerosol for smaller spray can work.

  4. 4
    Apply the colour coat

Finish with mixed Mipa OC colour or a filled 2K aerosol, using light even passes so edges do not flood.

  5. 5
Let the coating cure before fitting

Allow the coating to harden properly before screws, clips or moving hinge parts put pressure on the fresh finish.

Which metal hardware coating method should you choose?

Use the liquid 2K method for the strongest refinish

Choose Mipa EP Primer Surfacer and Mipa OC when the part needs a more durable professional finish and spray gun application is available.

Use the aerosol method for small removable details

Choose 2K-EP Primer Filler Spray and Mipa 2K Prefilled Spray for one-off pieces, awkward shapes and smaller colour repairs.

Use careful edge control on hinges and handles

Keep coating layers even near holes and moving points, because thick paint can make hardware tight after reassembly.

Technical details

  • Mipa EP Primer Surfacer is specified for direct adhesion on steel, aluminium and zinc and is mixed 2:1 with Mipa EP hardener E 5.
  • Mipa 2K Prefilled Spray has an integrated hardener pack and a working pot life of about 5 to 6 hours after activation.
  • Small hardware should be cleaned after sanding as well as before sanding, because finger oils and metal dust can weaken adhesion.
  • Primer and colour coats should stay thin around screw holes, hinge pins and edges so the part still fits after curing.
Practical suggestion

Hang or support small pieces so both faces can be coated cleanly, and keep screws separate until the finish is hard enough for reassembly.
