Paint motorcycle wheels

Motorcycle wheel refinishing

Guide to painting motorcycle wheels

Motorcycle wheels need careful cleaning and sanding before primer and silver wheel finish are applied. Brake dust, tyre dressing, road grime and sharp spoke edges can all affect adhesion, so surface preparation is the key part of the repaint.

What do you need to paint motorcycle wheels?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover and silicone remover spray remove brake dust residue, tyre dressing, grease and silicone before sanding or primer.

Wheel surface sanding

The MP Hand Support Plate helps sand broader rim faces and accessible spokes more evenly before primer.

Epoxy primer filler

Mipa EP primer filler with EP Hardener E 10 short and EP Thinner creates an epoxy primer base on prepared metal.

Wheel silver finish

Mipa Wheel Silver Spray 400ml and Mipa Wheel Silver 1l give the silver wheel finish in aerosol or liquid format.

How to paint motorcycle wheels

  1. 1
    Remove dirt and residue

Clean the wheel carefully and degrease the coating area before sanding.

  2. 2
    Sand the wheel surface

Key accessible rim faces, spoke areas and edges so primer is not applied over smooth or contaminated coating.

  3. 3
    Prime prepared metal

Apply the EP primer filler system to prepared metal areas that need a stable primer base.

  4. 4
    Apply Wheel Silver

Use Mipa Wheel Silver in the chosen format and build the silver finish in even coats around rim curves and spoke edges.

  5. 5
    Cure before refitting

Let the wheel finish cure before tyre work, balancing weights or cleaning chemicals touch the fresh coating.

Which Wheel Silver format should you choose?

Aerosol wheel finish

Use Wheel Silver Spray for one wheel, local work or small areas where aerosol application is practical.

Liquid wheel finish

Use Wheel Silver 1l for spray gun work, multiple wheels or larger controlled refinishing.

Epoxy primer first

Use EP primer filler on prepared bare metal areas before the wheel silver finish.

Technical details

  • EP primer filler provides a corrosion protective primer base on prepared metal wheel areas.
  • Wheel edges and spoke corners need even sanding and coating because thin edges lose film build quickly.
  • Do not coat tyre bead seats, valve stems, brake discs, hub mating faces or threaded contact areas.
  • Wheel silver should be allowed to cure before tyre mounting, balancing weights or aggressive cleaning.
Practical suggestion

Plan wheel painting around tyre and brake work. Mask accurately, keep functional contact areas paint free and let the finish cure before fitting weights or allowing tyre equipment to touch the new coating.
