Products for painting a fiberglass boat panel above the waterline

A fiberglass boat panel above the waterline needs wax and grease removal before sanding, because old gelcoat contamination can cause poor wetting, fish eyes or weak adhesion.

What do you need to paint a fiberglass boat panel?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes grease, silicone and wax before sanding, priming or coating.

Surface keying

MP Hand Block Soft or MP Sanding Sponge helps dull glossy areas and keep curved edges even before primer or topcoat.

Epoxy primer for mixed substrates

Mipa EP 100-20 is the epoxy primer method for steel, zinc-coated steel, aluminium, fibreglass and mineral substrates before the finishing coat.

Gloss polyurethane finish

Mipa PU 250-90 gives a glossy 2K polyurethane finish for above-water panels, with the matching hardener and 2K thinner used in the same coating stage.

2K spray option

Mipa Mix PU 250 2K Paint Spray 48+ gives a compact above-water finish option for small fiberglass covers or localized panel sections.

How to paint a fiberglass boat panel above the waterline

  1. 1
    Degrease first

Clean the fiberglass or gelcoat surface before sanding so old wax and polish are not spread through the sanding scratches.

  2. 2
    Sand to a uniform key

Use controlled sanding to remove gloss and create a consistent mechanical grip without flattening curved panel detail.

  3. 3
    Prime exposed or repaired areas

Apply the epoxy primer where fiberglass, filler or repair patches need a stable foundation before the finish coat.

  4. 4
    Finish with PU topcoat

Apply the gloss polyurethane finish in controlled coats, keeping the film even across the visible panel.

  5. 5
    Protect the cure

Avoid early water, cleaning products and abrasion while the 2K film is still developing hardness.

Which fiberglass panel coating products should you choose?

For bare or repaired fiberglass

Use the epoxy primer stage before the visible finish so the repaired surface is sealed and consistent.

For a full visible panel

Use the liquid PU 250-90 system for better control across a larger panel.

For a small removable cover

Use the 2K spray method when the part size and colour preparation make spray-can work practical.

Technical details

  • Mipa EP 100-20 is listed for fibreglass as well as steel, zinced steel, aluminium and mineral substrates.
  • Mipa PU 250-90 uses the matching PU hardener and 2K thinner for the final finish stage.
  • Fiberglass and gelcoat surfaces should be degreased before sanding so wax residue does not remain in the keyed surface.
  • This above-waterline page is separate from underwater hull coating or antifouling work.
Practical suggestion

On older gelcoat, clean twice before sanding and inspect the wiped surface under strong light before primer, because wax residue is one of the most common causes of visible finish defects.
