Strip and repaint a small metal object

Small metal repaint guide

Guide to stripping and repainting a small metal object

A small metal object with failing paint needs more than a quick colour coat. This guide follows a safer repaint method: remove loose or old coating, clean the bare surface, prime with corrosion protection and finish with a durable 2K colour option.

What do you need to strip and repaint a small metal object?

Paint removal

Mipa Quick paint stripper or Mipa Paint Stripper Spray helps remove old paint layers before a clean repaint starts.

Cleaning after stripping

Mipa silicone remover liquid or spray removes residue after stripping and again after sanding.

Sanding and surface keying

MP Sanding Pad helps remove remaining edges, smooth the stripped metal and prepare the surface for primer.

Epoxy primer layer

Mipa EP Primer Surfacer with Mipa EP hardener E 5 and Mipa 2K Thinner Short V 10 gives the exposed metal a corrosion resistant base.

Aerosol primer layer

Mipa 2K-EP Primer Filler Spray incl. hardener is a compact 2K primer method for small objects and awkward shapes.

Final 2K colour

Mipa OC Ready Mixed Tones RM or Mipa 2K Prefilled Spray gives the repainted object a durable colour finish.

How to strip and repaint a small metal object

  1. 1
    Remove failing paint

Use the paint stripper method only on a suitable surface, then remove softened coating and residue completely.

  2. 2
    Clean and sand the metal

Degrease, sand to a uniform surface and clean again so no stripper residue remains before primer.

  3. 3
    Prime exposed metal

Use EP Primer Surfacer or 2K-EP Primer Filler Spray to protect the bare metal and create a sound base for colour.

  4. 4
    Apply colour

Use Mipa OC with the specified hardener and thinner, or use a filled 2K aerosol for small object application.

  5. 5
    Cure before use

Let the finish harden before the object is handled, assembled or exposed to abrasion.

Which stripping and repaint method should you choose?

Use stripper when old paint is failing

Paint stripper helps remove coatings that are too cracked, thick or loose to sand back safely into a stable edge.

Use epoxy primer on exposed metal

A stripped metal surface needs corrosion protection before the colour stage, especially on steel edges and corners.

Use 2K aerosol for small one-off parts

A filled 2K aerosol reduces setup work when the object is small, portable and colour matched.

Technical details

  • Mipa Abbeizer Spray is listed for removing old paint and varnish layers from common substrates including metal.
  • Any stripper residue must be removed before primer, because contamination can disturb adhesion and curing.
  • EP Primer Surfacer is the correct primer method when bare steel, aluminium or zinc needs adhesion and corrosion protection.
  • Activated 2K aerosol or liquid 2K colour should be used within the working limits of the coating system.
Practical suggestion

Do not rush from stripping to colour. The repaint depends on a clean, neutral, sanded and primed metal surface.
