Guide to painting a painted plastic bumper

A painted plastic bumper needs clean preparation, flexible edge adhesion and the correct clearcoat finish. Plastic primer is important where sanding exposes plastic or where the existing coating edge needs extra adhesion support.

What do you need to paint a painted plastic bumper?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid format and Mipa silicone remover spray remove wax, grease and silicone before sanding or coating. Clean again after sanding so dust and fingerprints do not sit under the new finish.

Plastic adhesion primer

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer and Mipa Plastic Primer Spray create an adhesion bridge on prepared vehicle plastics. This is especially important on painted bumper areas where coating movement and edge adhesion matter.

Fast clearcoat option

Mipa 2K Clearcoat Spray gives an activated aerosol clearcoat method for smaller bumper or panel work. Use it where the area is limited and the finish still needs 2K gloss protection.

Liquid clearcoat method

Mipa 2K HS Clearcoat CC 8 with Mipa 2K HS Hardener HS 10 short gives a liquid 2K clearcoat method for a controlled bumper repaint after the colour layer is ready.

How to paint a painted plastic bumper

  1. 1
    Clean the bumper thoroughly

Remove wax, road film, silicone and fingerprints before sanding. Pay attention to edges, recesses and lower areas that collect contamination.

  2. 2
    Sand the painted surface

Key sound old paint evenly and feather any edges where the coating is exposed or thinned. Do not leave shiny unsanded patches.

  3. 3
    Prime exposed plastic

Apply the plastic primer only where the work exposes plastic or where adhesion support is needed on prepared bumper material.

  4. 4
    Apply the colour layer

Apply the matched colour layer over the prepared bumper surface and keep coats controlled around curved edges and corners.

  5. 5
    Finish with 2K clearcoat

Apply the chosen 2K clearcoat method after the colour layer has flashed. Let the finish cure before fitting, washing or polishing the bumper.

Which bumper painting products should you choose?

Plastic primer format

Use Mipa 1K Plastic Primer for liquid application and Mipa Plastic Primer Spray for smaller bumper areas or aerosol work.

Aerosol clearcoat format

Use Mipa 2K Clearcoat Spray where the bumper repair is limited and an activated spray can finish is the chosen method.

Liquid clearcoat format

Use CC 8 with HS 10 short hardener for a spray-gun clearcoat method when the bumper area is larger or needs a more controlled finish.

Technical details

  • Plastic primer is an adhesion promoter, not a filler for deep bumper damage.
  • Prepared painted plastic still needs thorough degreasing because polish, wax and silicone often sit on bumper surfaces.
  • Clearcoat protects the colour layer and gives the finished bumper its gloss.
  • A plastic bumper should be supported during spraying so edges and curves can be coated evenly.
Practical suggestion

If the bumper has cracks, torn mounting points or deep gouges, repair the plastic structure first before treating it as a repaint job.
