Guide to coating tool trolleys and tool boxes

A steel trolley or tool box needs a clean, keyed and corrosion resistant coating system that can handle handling marks, drawer edges and daily paintshop use.

What do you need to coat tool trolleys and tool boxes?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes grease, wax and silicone before sanding, priming or coating.

Epoxy corrosion primer

Mipa EP 100-20 gives a zinc phosphate epoxy base on steel, zinc, aluminium, GRP and mineral surfaces; use it with Mipa EP hardener and EP thinner.

Textured polyurethane finish

Mipa PU 300-70 creates a durable satin gloss textured 2K polyurethane finish for steel cabinets, tools, machine parts and exterior industrial metal.

Semi gloss polyurethane finish

Mipa PU 250-50 gives a smoother semi gloss 2K polyurethane finish for metal parts where a clean coated look matters more than texture.

Prefilled 2K PU spray option

Mipa 2K-PU-Industry-Prefilled Spray is suited to small parts, edges and local colour work when a mixed spray gun application is unnecessary.

How to coat tool trolleys and tool boxes

  1. 1
    Strip loose material and clean

Remove loose paint, rust and oil first, then clean with silicone remover before abrasive work so contamination is not sanded into the surface.

  2. 2
    Key the metal

Sand or scuff the old coating and exposed steel until the surface is stable, dull and ready for primer.

  3. 3
    Prime exposed or repaired metal

Apply Mipa EP 100-20 with the matching EP hardener and EP thinner on bare or corrosion sensitive areas.

  4. 4
    Choose the visible finish

Use PU 300-70 for a textured industrial finish or PU 250-50 for a smoother semi gloss finish.

  5. 5
Let the coating cure before loading

Allow drawers, handles and contact edges to harden before tools and trays are put back into use.

Which coating finish should you choose?

Textured finish

Choose PU 300-70 when the trolley or box should hide handling marks and look like a robust industrial item.

Smooth semi gloss finish

Choose PU 250-50 when easier wipe-down cleaning and a cleaner visual finish are more important than a texture.

Technical details

  • PU 300-70 is paired with Mipa 2K Texture Hardener A 61 and Mipa 2K thinner for the textured topcoat stage.
  • PU 250-50 is paired with Mipa PUR Plus Hardener A60 and Mipa 2K thinner for the smoother 2K PU stage.
  • EP 100-20 uses Mipa EP hardener and Mipa EP thinner, keeping the epoxy primer stage separate from the polyurethane finish.
  • Mipa 2K-PU-Industry-Prefilled Spray is best kept for small parts, edges and local colour work rather than a full trolley body.
Practical suggestion

Remove drawers, handles and rubber parts where possible before coating. Small disassembled parts are easier to degrease, scuff and spray evenly than a fully assembled trolley.
