Guide to painting bollards, barriers and security grilles

Bollards, barriers and security grilles need a tough metal coating build because they face weather, handling, impact risk and visible public facing wear.

What do you need to paint bollards, barriers and security grilles?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes contamination before abrasive work and coating work starts.

Fine sanding before coating

MP Fine sanding pad helps key old paint, smooth edges and reach shaped metal before primer or final colour is applied.

Epoxy primer for strong adhesion

Mipa EP 100-20 with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner gives steel and other suitable metals a 2K epoxy primer stage.

High strain polyurethane finish

Mipa PU 240-50 in price groups I, II and III creates the semi gloss 2K PU finish, used with Mipa PU 912-25 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25.

2K spray finish for smaller parts

Mipa Mix PU 240 2K Paint Spray 48+ is the practical spray option for smaller repairs, bars, brackets and difficult shapes where a gun mix is too much.

How to paint bollards, barriers and security grilles

  1. 1
    Clean the metal

Remove dirt first, then degrease the bollards, barriers and security grilles with Mipa silicone remover so sanding dust and grease do not stay under the coating.

  2. 2
    Sand and remove weak coating

Key sound paint, feather damaged edges and remove loose rust or peeling coating until the remaining surface is firm.

  3. 3
    Prime bare or repaired areas

Use the specified primer stage on exposed metal and let it dry according to the technical information before the next layer.

  4. 4
    Apply the colour coat

Apply the high strain semi gloss polyurethane colour in controlled coats, keeping edges, welds, corners and underside returns covered.

  5. 5
    Let the finish cure

Allow the coating to harden before assembly, handling or outdoor exposure, especially on parts that will be touched or cleaned often.

Which barrier and grille coating products should you choose?

Use PU 240-50 for harder service

Mipa PU 240-50 is the stronger finish method for items that see more abrasion, handling and outdoor stress.

Use spray for small shapes

Mipa Mix PU 240 2K Paint Spray 48+ suits smaller bars, edges and local repair work where a full liquid setup is not practical.

Keep primer and topcoat chemistry separate

Use the EP hardener and thinner with the epoxy primer, then use the PU hardener and 2K thinner with the topcoat.

Technical details

  • Mipa PU 240-50 is the main semi gloss 2K PU finish for bollards, barriers and security grilles; it is matched with Mipa PU 912-25 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 is the 2K epoxy primer stage for steel, zinced steel, aluminium and GRP when the substrate and preparation match the technical data.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 must be combined with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner for the epoxy primer stage.
  • Mipa Mix PU 240 2K Paint Spray 48+ is the small format 2K colour option for local work and complex shapes.
  • Public or safety critical metalwork requires checking local coating, access and safety requirements before the work starts.
Practical suggestion

Pay extra attention to lower sections and mounting plates. These areas catch standing water, salt, dirt and impact marks first.
