Paint trailer wheels

Trailer wheel repainting with primer and silver wheel finish

Guide to painting trailer wheels

Trailer wheels need strong cleaning before paint because brake dust, road salt and tyre fitting residue can weaken the finish. This guide uses silicone remover, sanding, Mipa Rapidprimer and Mipa Wheel Silver so the wheel is prepared before the silver coating is applied.

What do you need to paint trailer wheels?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover and Mipa silicone remover spray colourless 400 ml remove grease, road film and handling residue before sanding or primer.

Sanding preparation

MP Sanding Sponge keys wheel faces, rim edges and curved sections so primer and wheel silver have a dull prepared surface.

Wheel primer

Mipa Rapidprimer and Mipa Rapidprimer Spray build the primer stage on prepared wheel metal and local bare spots before the silver finish.

Wheel silver finish

Mipa Wheel Silver 1 l and Mipa Wheel Silver Spray 400 ml create the visible silver wheel coating after the primer stage.

How to paint trailer wheels

  1. 1
    Clean the wheel

Remove dirt, brake dust and greasy residue, then wipe the paintable area with silicone remover.

  2. 2
    Sand the surface

Key the wheel face, rim edge and curved sections with the sanding sponge, then remove sanding dust.

  3. 3
    Mask functional areas

Protect tyres, valves, bolt seats, hub contact faces and brake parts before primer or wheel silver is sprayed.

  4. 4
    Apply primer

Use Mipa Rapidprimer on prepared bare or local exposed metal before the silver finish.

  5. 5
    Apply wheel silver

Finish with Mipa Wheel Silver in liquid or aerosol format and let the coating dry before the wheel is handled or refitted.

Which wheel painting format should you choose?

Liquid wheel silver

Use the 1 l wheel silver format when several wheels or larger wheel surfaces need controlled spray gun application.

Wheel silver aerosol

Use the 400 ml aerosol for a single wheel, narrow areas or local cosmetic work where a compact spray method is easier.

Primer format choice

Use Rapidprimer liquid for larger prepared areas and Rapidprimer Spray for smaller exposed spots and edges.

Technical details

  • Mipa Rapidprimer is the primer stage before wheel finish on prepared wheel surfaces.
  • Mipa Wheel Silver is the visible silver finish and is available here as liquid product and aerosol.
  • Tyres, valves, bolt seats, brake discs and hub mounting faces should remain free from coating.
  • Cleaning and sanding are separate preparation steps before primer and finish.
Practical suggestion

Mark the wheel position before removal if the trailer has been balanced or set up carefully. Paint work is easier off the trailer, but clean masking around the tyre, valve and bolt seats is still essential.
