Guide to painting hard plastic garden furniture

Hard plastic garden chairs, tables and benches need a clean, lightly keyed surface before a primer or plastic coating can grip properly. This guide helps you choose cleaning, scuffing, priming and finishing materials for rigid outdoor plastic furniture that is worth refinishing instead of replacing.

What do you need to paint hard plastic garden furniture?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes wax, grease, oil and silicone before sanding or coating. Use it after normal washing so the coating is not fighting invisible contamination from outdoor use.

Controlled surface key

MP Non-woven Sanding Pad Very Fine red gives smooth plastic a fine, even matt surface without cutting deep scratches into chairs, tables or curved edges.

Adhesion primer

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer in tin or spray format creates a bonding layer on many rigid plastic substrates. It is the main bridge between prepared hard plastic and the coating that follows.

Primer filler for marks

Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler in spray or 1l format adds light filling where weathered plastic has fine scratches, sanding marks or uneven surface texture.

Plastic colour or texture finish

Mipa Plastic Paint Spray gives a matt plastic colour finish, while Mipa Bumper Paint Spray or Mipa Bumper Paint 1l creates a structured grey or black plastic effect when a textured surface is preferred.

How to paint hard plastic garden furniture

  1. 1
    Wash and dry the furniture

Remove soil, algae, loose old coating and polish residues first. Let the plastic dry fully before using silicone remover, because trapped water can weaken the next layers.

  2. 2
    Degrease before sanding

Wipe with Mipa silicone remover and a clean cloth, changing cloth areas often. This keeps sunscreen, wax and outdoor grime from being rubbed deeper into the plastic during sanding.

  3. 3
    Scuff the surface evenly

Use the red non-woven pad to dull shiny areas and edges. The goal is a uniform key, not heavy scratches that will show through the finish.

  4. 4
    Prime or level as needed

Apply Mipa 1K Plastic Primer for adhesion. Use Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler where small sanding marks need a smoother base before the final colour.

  5. 5
    Apply the chosen finish

Use light, even coats and keep edges, legs and underside corners controlled. Let the coating cure before stacking chairs or placing weight on tables and seats.

Which hard plastic furniture finish should you choose?

Smooth plastic colour

Choose Mipa Plastic Paint Spray when the furniture needs a clean matt plastic colour on smaller pieces, curved details or awkward shapes.

Structured plastic effect

Choose Mipa Bumper Paint Spray or Mipa Bumper Paint 1l when a fine textured grey or black plastic look suits the furniture better than a smooth decorative colour.

Levelling before colour

Choose Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler when weathering, light sanding marks or old texture would otherwise show through the finish.

Technical details

  • Mipa 1K Plastic Primer is a transparent silver adhesion primer for many automotive plastics, including ABS, PA, PBT, PC, POM, PP/EPDM, PPO, PUR and PVC.
  • Mipa 1K Plastic Primer Filler is a fast drying plastic primer with filling properties for prepared plastic substrates such as PP-EPDM, ABS, PC, PMMA, PA, PUR, PVC and GRP.
  • Mipa Plastic Paint Spray is an elastic matt topcoat for direct coating of suitable plastic parts and is applied in several light spray coats.
  • Mipa Bumper Paint Spray and Mipa Bumper Paint are used for textured plastic effects on suitable plastic surfaces.
  • Always test adhesion on a hidden area of old outdoor plastic before refinishing the visible faces.
Practical suggestion

For outdoor furniture, prepare one hidden leg or underside area first. Good adhesion after drying is a stronger sign than a nice wet finish immediately after spraying.
