Guide to painting a metal bed frame

A metal bed frame needs a smooth keyed surface and a suitable primer before colour, especially around corners, screw points and decorative curves that are touched during assembly.

What do you need to paint a metal bed frame?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes grease and handling marks before sanding and priming.

Sanding and smoothing

MP Sanding Sponge helps dull glossy old paint and smooth small chips without making shaped bars difficult to handle.

Metal primer

Mipa Metal Primer Grey approx. RAL 7032 chromate-free gives iron and steel a practical 1K primer stage before the decorative topcoat.

Spray primer for small details

Mipa 1K Epoxy Primer Spray is useful for rubbed through corners, screw areas and small bare metal spots on detailed frame sections.

Synthetic resin topcoat

Mipalin Synthetic Resin Topcoat gives the bed frame its final colour finish after the surface has been cleaned, sanded and primed.

How to paint a metal bed frame

  1. 1
    Take the frame apart

Remove bedding, caps and loose hardware so every visible rail, corner and joint can be cleaned and sanded properly.

  2. 2
    Clean and sand

Degrease with Mipa silicone remover, then sand old paint until it is dull, smooth and stable.

  3. 3
    Prime bare metal

Apply Mipa Metal Primer or Mipa 1K Epoxy Primer Spray on exposed metal and repaired areas before the colour coat.

  4. 4
    Apply the topcoat

Apply Mipalin Synthetic Resin Topcoat in controlled coats, keeping decorative curves and inner corners covered without heavy build up.

  5. 5
    Reassemble after curing

Let the coating harden before the frame is tightened together so bolts and brackets do not mark the fresh finish.

Which bed frame paint products should you choose?

Use liquid primer for larger rails

Mipa Metal Primer is the practical primer for main bars, legs and larger steel surfaces.

Use spray primer for small details

Mipa 1K Epoxy Primer Spray helps reach decorative curves, corners and rubbed through spots with less brushing.

Use Mipalin for the final colour

Mipalin Synthetic Resin Topcoat is the finish stage for this indoor metal furniture job.

Technical details

  • Mipa Metal Primer Grey approx. RAL 7032 chromate-free is the main 1K primer for iron and steel in this bed frame method.
  • Mipa 1K Epoxy Primer Spray is a local spray primer option for small exposed metal areas and detailed shapes.
  • Mipalin Synthetic Resin Topcoat provides the final colour finish after the metal bed frame has been cleaned, keyed and prepared.
  • Degreasing before sanding and again before coating helps avoid fingerprints and residue under the new finish.
  • Let all coated parts harden before bolting the frame together to reduce marking around screw points.
Practical suggestion

Number small brackets and screws during disassembly. It makes reassembly easier and keeps freshly coated parts from being handled too much.
