Guided decorative metal coating

Guide to painting outdoor metal sculptures

Outdoor metal sculptures need a coating build that respects the shape while protecting exposed edges, welds and decorative details from weather.

What do you need to paint outdoor metal sculptures?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes grease, wax and handling residue before sanding and coating.

Fine detail sanding

MP Non-woven Sanding Pad Very Fine helps key curved shapes, edges and decorative details without cutting the surface too aggressively.

Epoxy primer for exposed metal

Mipa EP 100-20 with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner gives the prepared sculpture a 2K epoxy primer stage.

Semi gloss polyurethane finish

Mipa PU 250-50 in price groups I, II and III creates the semi gloss colour finish, used with Mipa PUR Plus Hardener A60 net and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25.

2K spray finish for details

Mipa Mix PU 250 2K Paint Spray 48+ is useful for smaller sculpture sections, narrow forms and local colour work.

How to paint outdoor metal sculptures

  1. 1
    Clean the sculpture

Remove dirt and grease from all visible and hidden faces, including underside points where water sits.

  2. 2
    Sand without losing detail

Use the non-woven sanding pad to key the surface while keeping raised lines, texture and decorative edges intact.

  3. 3
    Prime exposed metal

Apply the epoxy primer stage on prepared bare metal and let it dry according to the technical information.

  4. 4
    Apply the colour finish

Use Mipa PU 250-50 or Mipa Mix PU 250 2K Paint Spray 48+ in controlled coats, turning the sculpture so edges and recesses are covered.

  5. 5
    Protect during curing

Keep the sculpture dry and protected while the coating hardens before it returns outdoors.

Which sculpture coating products should you choose?

Use the liquid system for larger sculptures

Mipa EP 100-20 under Mipa PU 250-50 is the stronger method for larger exterior metal sculptures.

Use spray for delicate shapes

Mipa Mix PU 250 2K Paint Spray 48+ helps reach curves, narrow gaps and local detail areas.

Keep surface texture visible

Very fine non-woven sanding helps prepare the surface without flattening decorative texture too much.

Technical details

  • Mipa PU 250-50 is the main semi gloss 2K PU finish for outdoor metal sculptures; it is matched with Mipa PUR Plus Hardener A60 net and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 is the 2K epoxy primer stage for steel, zinced steel, aluminium and GRP when the substrate and preparation match the technical data.
  • Mipa EP 100-20 must be used with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and Mipa EP Thinner, not with the PU topcoat hardener.
  • Mipa 1K Epoxy Primer Spray is a local spray primer option for smaller areas, edges and spot repairs.
  • Clean first, sand second and degrease again before coating so hidden grease is not trapped under the primer or finish.
  • Mipa Mix PU 250 2K Paint Spray 48+ is the small format 2K colour option for detailed shapes and local work.
Practical suggestion

Photograph the sculpture before stripping or sanding. It helps preserve the intended colour breaks, detail lines and orientation during repainting.
