Guide to painting waterside railings and exterior hardware

Waterside railings and exterior hardware need a clean, keyed and corrosion-protected coating build because splash water, hand contact and outdoor exposure quickly punish weak preparation.

What do you need to paint waterside railings and exterior hardware?

Cleaning and degreasing

Mipa silicone remover in liquid or spray format removes grease, silicone and wax before sanding, priming or coating.

Edge sanding and scuffing

MP Sanding Sponge reaches corners, welds and curved railing sections so primer and topcoat can grip instead of sitting on polished metal.

Epoxy primer stage

Mipa EP 100-20 with Mipa EP 950-25 hardener and EP thinner gives the metal a corrosion-resistant primer layer before the polyurethane finish.

Gloss polyurethane topcoat

Mipa PU 240-90 gives a high-gloss 2K polyurethane finish for railings, ladders and hardware above the waterline.

Topcoat hardener and thinner

Mipa PU 912-25 hardener and Mipa 2K Thinner Normal V 25 belong with the polyurethane finish stage for correct curing and application flow.

How to paint waterside railings and exterior hardware

  1. 1
    Remove contamination

Wash away salt, dirt and loose deposits, then use silicone remover before sanding so grease is not driven into the keyed surface.

  2. 2
    Key the surface

Sand glossy coating, oxidation and small rust spots back to a sound surface, with extra attention around welds, bolt holes and hand contact areas.

  3. 3
    Prime exposed metal

Apply the epoxy primer system to bare or vulnerable metal and allow the film to cure according to the technical information before overcoating.

  4. 4
    Apply the gloss finish

Mix the polyurethane topcoat with its hardener and thinner, then apply even coats without overloading edges or fittings.

  5. 5
    Respect curing before service

Leave painted railings and hardware protected from early water, abrasion and handling until the coating has hardened sufficiently.

Which railing and hardware coating products should you choose?

For exposed metal

Choose the epoxy primer path first when sanding exposes steel, zinc-coated steel or aluminium.

For visible handrails

Choose the gloss polyurethane finish where appearance, cleanability and outdoor resistance matter.

For small maintenance work

Use the spray cleaner for quick degreasing of smaller fittings and the liquid cleaner for larger railing sections.

Technical details

  • Mipa EP 100-20 is listed as a 2K epoxy primer for steel, zinced steel, aluminium, fibreglass and mineral substrates.
  • Mipa PU 240-90 is a 2K polyurethane acrylic paint for highly strained commercial, facade, machine and construction surfaces.
  • Use EP thinner only with the epoxy primer stage and 2K thinner only with the polyurethane topcoat stage.
  • This page is for waterside hardware above the waterline, not permanently submerged parts.
Practical suggestion

Work from the most hidden or lower areas toward the most visible handrail surfaces so any adjustment to brush, roller or spray technique happens before the final visible faces.
