Guide to painting wooden cabinets and doors

Wooden cabinets and doors need careful degreasing, smooth sanding and a finish that looks even across panels, profiles and handle areas. This method uses the waterborne WPA finish for a refined satin matt surface.

What do you need to paint wooden cabinets and doors?

WBS cleaning

Mipa WBS Cleaner prepares the surface inside the waterborne system, removing contamination that can disturb flow, adhesion or the final look.

Waterborne viscosity adjustment

Mipa WBS deionised water is the dedicated thinner for the WBS finish, used only when the coating needs controlled adjustment for brushing, rolling or spraying.

Satin matt wood finish

Mipa WPA 2100-40 gives a waterborne 1K PU acrylic satin matt finish for common wood surfaces, with a calm low-sheen look for furniture and visible interior pieces.

How to paint wooden cabinets and doors

  1. 1
    Remove hardware

Take off handles, hinges or loose fittings where practical, then label parts so the doors can be reassembled cleanly.

  2. 2
    Clean touch areas

Use Mipa WBS Cleaner on handle zones, front edges and cabinet faces where grease and skin oils collect.

  3. 3
    Sand and dust

Sand profiles, rails and flat panels to a uniform key, then remove dust from corners and moulded details.

  4. 4
    Apply the finish

Use Mipa WPA 2100-40 in thin even coats, working from detailed edges toward broad panels so brush marks can be laid off cleanly.

  5. 5
    Reassemble after cure

Let the coating harden before refitting handles, closing doors tightly or cleaning the new surface.

Which cabinet and door finish should you choose?

Satin matt for visible joinery

Mipa WPA 2100-40 gives cabinets and doors a calm satin matt look that hides glare better than a high gloss surface.

Use cleaner on old doors

Mipa WBS Cleaner is especially useful around handles, panel edges and kitchen or utility cabinets where residue can remain after normal washing.

Adjust only within WBS

Use Mipa WBS deionised water only when the application method needs the waterborne finish adjusted for flow or viscosity.

Technical details

  • Mipa WPA 2100-40 is intended for common wood types and furniture grade coating work in a waterborne 1K PU acrylic system.
  • Cabinet and door fronts should be sanded uniformly so repaired spots and old glossy areas do not show through as texture changes.
  • Handle zones need extra cleaning because repeated skin contact can leave invisible contamination.
  • Keep coats thin on profiles, inner corners and lower edges to prevent runs and heavy ridges.
Practical suggestion

Lay removable doors flat on supports for the smoothest face finish, then coat edges separately so paint does not pool on the lower side.
